07/31 Roxy Update

roxy001.jpg roxy002.jpg

In a foster home with a 12 year old female Chihuahua and a 4 year old male Min Pin, Roxy has settled in quite nicely! In fact, Foster mom Phoebe reported to us one morning that “She and the Min Pin were actually sleeping together on the same bed with me this morning =).” We were so pleased! Roxy lets her foster mom put her in her crate without incident. She’s a very cute and curious girl who is playful as well as affectionate. She’s a big mush and loves people.

Roxy just visited our vet for her vet check and did great - she’s ready for a forever home!

**Update** Roxy would be happiest in a home with no other dogs or with a very docile dog.

07/30 Emmie Update

Emmie has been busy learning! She now is used to her leash and rarely pulls except when she sees other dogs on walks- something she’s working on however. She also now does not give any problems when going in her crate. Her initial separation anxiety has also disappeared as well. She rather not be alone but at this point does not bark after her foster parents leave their home. Her foster mom is still working on her jumping up on them when they come home (she’s just so happy to see them!), which she has been improving with as well.

Foster mom Lisa says, ‘She appears more relaxed on walks & especially at home. Her playfulness has emerged & she very much enjoys playing tug-of-war.’ She is not aggressive with toys at all. Lisa also reports, Emmie ‘is happy & warm. She wags her tail when greeting…and when she knows we’re going for a walk. She welcomes being petted, especially on her tummy…She is very intelligent, learning commands & routines very quickly.’

Emmie has had her vet check, and in the words of our vet, ‘She’s beautiful and perfect!’ Emmie is now ready for her new forever home.

Introducing Molly

mollyshibarescue3.JPG

Molly is a very sweet & friendly 3 1/2 year old girl. Her previous owners contacted NYCSR as a last resort. They were surrendering Molly due to previously diagnosed food allergies and did not want her to end up in a shelter. The frequent trips to their vet for injections were time consuming and an expense that the family could not keep up with.

Upon arriving to see Molly, she was incredibly affectionate & playful with us from the very beginning. She was an absolute joy to visit with even though she obviously was uncomfortable due to her condition. Just about all the fur on her legs, around her mouth & eyes and in her ears was gone. We then took her to our Vet only to find out that the reason for her painful itchiness was sarcoptic mange- not necessarily her food allergies! Molly also was suffering from both yeast & parasitic ear infections in both ears. All of her scratching, biting & rubbing to relieve the itchiness was doing her so much more harm than good! During the extensive exam, Molly was a very good girl. She did not put up a fuss at all nor did she growl or show any signs of aggression whatsoever.

Molly is making an impressive recovery. In just over 3 weeks time she is no longer scratching at all- the itchiness is gone! There is only slight yeast still in one of her ears, which is still being treated. She also is happily eating up her new food - that does not contain any of the food types that she is allergic to. No more injections- the right nutrition is the answer. Dr Martin, who has done an amazing job with her says “Her skin looks great and all of her hair is regrowing!”.

Molly grew up with a young girl in the home so she’s used to a responsible, well-behaved child. She plays very well with other dogs during visits and on walks. She’s also attentive and knows her commands. We have not tested her with dogs in the home or with cats, however. She is up to date on shots and is spayed. She has won the hearts of NYCSR and the hospital staff with her sweet disposition and gentle nature. She will be a wonderful addition to the right forever home.

07/20 Ella Update

Ella's smileElla is extremely affectionate and loving. All she seems to want is belly rubs, scratches behind the ears and to give kisses. She really responds to both treats and affection as a method of training. She is very gentle in taking treats by hand. One thing we noticed about her is that sometimes when we are firm in tone with her when reprimanding, she reacts by being very scared and cowers as if she is bracing herself. We’re not sure if that means she was possibly struck in the past. She does come over to you after you are firm with her with a “NO or DROP IT” and comes to make up with you. She loves her humans.

She can be both food and toy aggressive with people. Most of the time she is great with toys, playing fetch and bringing the toy to you to play with her. However, sometimes she can be growly. It’s the same with food. Many times she will growl when you come close to her food while she is eating - fearing you will take it from her.

When Ella first came to us she was growly in many more instances. It seemed that for most things she did not like (going inside the crate for the night, having the stitches from her spay checked, etc) she would give a low growl and then show teeth. After gaining her trust we have brought that down to a minimum with her only growling at the above situations. Her progress has been on going.

Ella also gets nervous around some women. This manifests itself with growling. However when reprimanded, she responds immediately and then behaves. We’ve observed that with confident women she is not like this - she in fact will be loving. A woman who displays uncertainty, fear or is not firm with her will get back a grrrr. She should be with people experienced with dogs.

She is a moderate energy dog with 2 walks and a decent amount of playtime enough to keep her happy and tired at night to go to ed. She eats well, sleeps well, is now crate (meaning she will go into the crate without incident) & leash trained (does well with a harness, not as well with a collar), UTD on shots and negative on heartworm test.

Introducing Ginger

fullshot.jpgThis affectionate cream girl is 5 1/2 years old. Her owners, who love her so much, contacted us for help because their 1 year old son is allergic to dogs. They could not stand the thought of her going to a shelter, so luckily for Ginger, they brought her to us instead and we are going to find Ginger a loving, forever home.

Ginger likes to be around people of all ages- including kids! Ginger does not seem to get along with other dogs, though. She does love to play with her soft toys, go on walks and play fetch. She also loves to be petted and rubbed on her tummy. Her mom said “Playtime is anytime!” She’s also totally housebroken and knows her commands. What a good girl - She even LIKES going to the groomer!

Ginger is now up to date on all her vaccinations and is being spayed this week. Once she has had a chance to recover she’ll be available for adoption!

Hero is Our Hero

Hero’s adoption was finalized today.

And Terra didn’t even cry!

That is all. :)

Crazy Nami Update

So, for anyone that hasn’t been watching the comments, the big news of the day is that Nami (was Cream Boy) dashed out the door and took his foster parents for a nice long chase today!

Michele’s July 12th comment:

Nami is doing really well in my home. He now gets along well with my Shiba - Shabu, they play together all the time. I’m still working on him getting along with my mix dog - Bosco. Last night we had all three of them upstairs together with Bosco on a leash just in case. Everything went well. Nami is such a sweet lovey dog and loves to be held and pet. Both shibas sleep in bed cuddled up with me all night long.

And her July 14th (today) comment after being asked about his age and his name:

The paperwork from the shelter says he’s 4-6 years old. Nami means wave. He’s like the white crest of a wave. He actually escaped out my front door today and we had to chase him down in the car until he was tired of running and my boyfriend was able to snatch him up. He had me so scared he was going to get hit by a car. I’m so glad he’s ok, and safe back at my home.

AND while we’re at it, here are a couple new photos of Nami too!

Blueberry Update

Blueberry (now Kodi) went to his new home a few weeks ago and is loving life with his new family, especially his “sister” Tika. I saw Kodi at a Shiba Meetup a week or so after his adoption was finalized and he was definitely a happy boy.

Yay Blueberry, uh, I mean Kodi!

Sissy is doing great in foster care. She’s a real sweetie and definitely ready for her forever home.

Introducing Roxy

Roxy, 6 year old female ShibaRoxy recently arrived at a no kill shelter in NJ as a stray. We normally only work with shelters where dogs are in immediate danger, but the Operations Supervisor at this shelter was concerned because Roxy was becoming quite anxious in the kennels. She contacted Shiba rescue about finding a foster or permanent home for Roxy.

She was both microchipped and spayed prior to arriving in the shelter. The microchip was registered to a pet store that has since been closed, but the microchipping company was at least able to tell the shelter that Roxy is 6 years old. Her temperament evaluation at the shelter showed she is both cat and dog friendly, prefers the company of male dogs more than females, no aggression issues were noted. They did note that Roxy doesn’t tolerate being restrained well, and therefore bypassed that during her evaluation. No signs of food aggression and takes treats very well.

Terra went and picked up Roxy from the shelter yesterday and took her to foster care. So far things are going well and we’ll post more information for you soon!

07/10 Chad Update

Chad continues to do great in his foster home, he is such a good boy. Earlier this month, Foster mom Irma ‘gave him a bath and he was FABULOUS! No Shiba scream, no scratching- he was an angel’. She brushes him at the dog run where ‘he sits down like a furry gentlemen and welcomed the brushing’.

He’s ready for the perfect forever home- one that has a friendly female dog for him to be best friends with!

07/10 Ella Update

Ella is enjoying her new foster home very much! She really is so much happier as an only dog and no kids. Ella gets along with other dogs on walks and in the dog run just fine- she just needs to be an only dog in the home. Ella LOVES belly rubs, scratches and her toys. She will nudge you for more love! She is happy to cuddle next to you and be petted all day or just hang out. She’s great on leash and is completely housebroken.

Ella is making progress in learning her boundaries. We’ve learned that she definitely prefers men to women- she loves guys! And she requires a home with someone who is dog experienced; who will be patient in their work to continue to socialize her properly.

07/10 Sissy Update

Sissy is doing really well in her new foster home as an only dog. After getting settled it’s clear to see that she really excels on her own as she was becoming a bit too bossy to the other dogs that she was living with. Foster mom Michelle says, ‘Sissy’s doing great. I’ve discovered she has a love of grassy areas and she’s happiest when we’re at Central Park.’

However, Sissy seems to really get along with other dogs when she does not live with them. She prefers to hang out and play with them on walks and at the dog run. At the run she is extraordinarily friendly and there has never been a problem with other dogs.

As Sissy has come out of her shell she really has become even more affectionate, and loving to her foster mom.

07/08 Hero Update

hero.jpg

Hero is currently being fostered in Queens while foster mom, Michele, is away on her honeymoon. Boy, he’s just fit right in. Foster dad Jesse says, ‘He’s REALLY made himself at home and has really bonded with both of us. He follows me EVERYWHERE! He LOVES to sleep on me, too…hahaha! On my feet, resting his head on my chest, with a paw on my leg…just so long as he’s touching me, he’s happy! Such a little sweetheart! We’re really lovin’ that lil guy – it almost feels like he’s always been there!…We’re having SUCH a good time with him!!!’

What more can we say?! Hero is an amazing boy! When I saw him, I could not believe how wonderful he looked… his walk is incredible- there is virtually no limp at all at this point. He’s getting stronger and stronger.

Introducing Emmie

emmie

Emmie is a very cute 3 year old spayed girl who is about 30 pounds. Emmie was originally found on the steps of a church in Flushing, Queens. She was muzzled and her front paws were duct taped. After being put into foster care upstate and then adopted, Emmie was then returned to rescue upstate after her adopted family could not take care of her and their young family. Right now, Emmie is in foster care with NYCSR.

Emmie’s foster mom says she’s very smart! She’s learned the ropes and bonded within her foster home very quickly. She’s also a really sweet affectionate shiba. She is eating well and has learned to like her crate. Emmie was having some issues with separation anxiety which her foster mom has been working on as well with great strides having been made. She is also working on further training with Emmie and getting her more comfortable around other dogs on walks.

Emmie would do really well as an only child in an experienced dog owner’s home. She’s very loyal and just needs time and dedication to continue her progress.
