Responsible Dog Ownership Day, NYC 2007

Shibas Shine at Responsible Dog Ownership Day

NYC Shiba Rescue, Inc. (NYCSR) staffed a “Meet the Breed” table at the AKC’s Responsible Dog Ownership Day in New York City’s Madison Square Park on September 15, 2007. AKC’s Responsible Dog Ownership Day highlights the AKC programs and services that support responsible dog ownership and this year marked the first time the Shiba Inu breed has been represented at the flagship event in New York City. This was the largest Meet the Breeds ever with 50 breeds represented to the approximately 7,500 people in attendance in NYC, plus the millions of dog lovers and potential pet owners reached through extensive media coverage.

Jenna Gates, NYCSR’s President & Founder, and Zennia Barahona, Foster Program Director, showed off three awesome Shibas* who were sweet enough to deal with strangers crowding around and petting them for four hours straight. Jenna & Zennia also handed out over 100 Shiba Inu brochures, talked to countless people about the breed, and recruited a few new volunteers for NYCSR.

Meet the Shibas

In addition to rescuing and finding homes for Shiba Inu and Shiba Inu mixed-breed dogs, NYSCR makes it a priority to educate members of the public about responsible dog ownership and specifically about the Shiba Inu breed. We look forward to attending more events like Responsible Dog Ownership Day.

*Shibas in attendance were Snickers (bred by Sandra Krupski) and Benno & Lily (both bred by Laura Perkinson).

Introducing Lightening

LighteningLightening is a neutered, male Shiba Inu. He’s about a year old. He is up to date on all vaccinations and was recently treated, successfully, for heartworms.

Lightening was brought into a shelter in Ohio as a stray several months ago. A Shiba rescuer there took him in and after about a month, Lightening was adopted by a couple here in NYC. Although Lightening normally gets along very well with other dogs, there was a misunderstanding between him and the resident dog and she remained afraid of him afterwards. Everyone felt it would be best for her if Lightening found a new home.

Lightening is a high energy, young boy who loves to play and get lots of exercise. He will growl and show teeth when someone approaches a high value treat, especially rawhide. He is otherwise a very affectionate and snuggly boy. He gets along with other dogs in the home and LOVES to play with toys and with other dogs. He’s been making very good progress learning not to resource guard and that training needs to be continued.

Lightening is a very loving (and incredibly smart) dog. With an owner that will continue teaching him NILIF (nothing in life is free), Lightening will be a great pet and companion. He should be in a home with another dog (or dogs) that will NOT let him be a bully, so he learns his place.

Introducing Fuji

fujidoor.jpg fujiheadshot.jpg

Say hello to Fuji! She’s a very well behaved 5 year old who is spayed, microchipped, good with kids, babies, cats, and other dogs. Her former owners’ wanted to find her the best home possible as they were not able to give her the time and attention they know she deserves.

Upon evaluation, our Intake Director Michele had the most amazing things to report about her. ‘When we came to the door [Fuji] came to greet us but didn’t bark or jump or anything & was just happy. Fuji is so affectionate- she just sits by you and gives kisses. She is also beautiful!’

Soon after evaluation we placed her in foster care much to the delight of her foster mom! Maria tells us that Fuji is so sweet and is getting used to not only her new routine but also Mojave, the resident cat at Maria’s home. She’s also quickly adjusting to living in a new area and going on many walks. We’ll have more photos and updates on Fuji soon so check back often!
