This little cutie pie is Penny. Penny is almost two years old and she’s a small, tri-colored – or what some people call a red-headed black and tan – Shiba Inu.
Penny was purchased from a pet store as a puppy. She wasn’t taught the rules or boundaries of her new home and grew up making her own rules. She was surrendered to us a few days ago because she was reportedly an ankle and foot biter, with a tendency to nip at visitors or when startled.
The first day Penny was with us, she was very quiet. I think she was sad and confused. By the second day, though, Penny was snarling at me and at Snickers when we came into “her” territory (near her crate) or when I wanted to pick her up or put her leash on. She was clearly nervous and trying to stake out her space and protect herself. After a day of quiet, firm reprimands from both myself and Snick, she decided to respect us. Now, after only four days, she is a snuggly loving girl who plays with Snickers and lets me handle her whenever and however I want. She’s adjusting to the city and she’s learning to accept new people and situations faster every day. She feels confident and safe with me and Snickers; she hasn’t snapped at anyone and I don’t really think she will.
Stay tuned for more information about Penny.

omg she is so pretty
i wish i could meet her
she is really cute look at her expression !
I know everyone says that Shibas look like foxes, but this little cutie’s face REALLY does look like a fox! Precious.
Good job putting her in her place! Seems she just needed a little firm but not scary, leadership.
How is penny with female dogs and assertive male dogs? She is a doll! Great video clips as well!
Penny is fine with most dogs as long as they leave her alone. She is afraid of rude dogs that don’t send good calming signals. She will fight back if attacked but only until she can run away. She is VERY PLAYFUL at home with Snickers.
im glad shes doing well im rosa’s son
She’s a DOLL! She’s sleeping next to me on the couch right now. So sweet!
PENNY IS LIKE ONE OF THE CUTEST DOGS I HAD EVER SEEN.I HOPE I COULD ADOPT HER
she is the cutest thing ever
How has penny done with the ankle and heel biting? Is she still very territorial? She is super cute. It’s weird to think that she is about half the size of the shiba I currently have.
she seems perfect for me & my family.

Hi, can I adopt Penny?
Hello everyone,
Thank you for your interest in Penny. Our adoption process starts when an adoption application is submitted. Applications are reviewed in chronological order based on date received. Depending on the initial review, we check references and conduct a home visit. After the home visit, if we have a dog that you are interested in and we think is a good match, then we set up a time/place for you to meet the dog. Following the meeting, there is a 24 hour waiting period during which all parties decide if the adoption should move forward.

Abigail – No, she hasn’t shown ANY signs of nipping since a week or so after she came to live with me. She just needed some rules.
She weighed 13.9 pounds when I first took her to the vet and probably weighs about 13 now. She was a tad overweight, but now she has a cute little waist.
13.9 lbs is overweight? My gracious…my shiba is twice her size. That’d be funny having 2 dogs of the same breed next to each other that are that large of a difference in size.
Actually no. That would normally not be overweight for a female Shiba.
A perfectly sized female should be around 16 or 17 pounds. However, Penny is a good bit shorter than the standard, so 13.9 pounds on her little frame was too much. She was like a little round sausage – no waist and no tuck up. She is just perfectly cute, cute, CUTE now though.
My male, Snickers, is 24 pounds and they are adorable together when we go walking. Penny walks right beside him (practically brushing up against him) and they make quite a pair.
I bet that is really adorable to see those 2 walking together…..it’s hard to believe that they can be so different in size and yet the same breed.
What exactly is her issue with children. Does she get growly or do they do a number on her little shiba nerves? There are no children in our home, but my cousin (a very mature 10 year old) visits about twice a year. After months of looking at (and wanting to keep) your shibas, I’m finally filling out the application. Most of the dogs seem to have notes to the effect of “no children” and I was just a bit curious about it.
Hi Nan,
Penny doesn’t have a problem with children specifically, but sudden noises and movements make her nervous and jumpy, so it is not recommended that she live with small children.

Dear Jenna,
Was Penny adopted? Is she doing well?
Hi Rosa,
Yes Penny was adopted at the beginning of the month and is doing fabulously!
Last update on Penny was July 2008. Has there been any more news as to how she is doing or any current pictures?
