6/28 Ginger update

Ginger’s foster had this to say:

Just wanted to give everyone a quick update. Ginger is doing really well now. She is getting along well with every body who comes over to the house, though she likes to jump on them and lick their face/hands. She isn’t hiding very much any more, though she likes to crawl in the closet from time to time to sleep/hide in the laundry hamper to get away from the storm. She knows when bed time is, because she’ll hop right on to my bed and occupy my sleeping spot. Haha. She seems to really like the Hund and Flocken gold brand, as she gobbles it right up, and she likes to beg for food, unfortunately, but I haven’t really been giving her any. When I come home, she goes crazy and can’t decide if she wants to jump on me, lick me or make me play with her, so she kind of does it all at once. On walks, she can be good, but sometimes she likes to lean her entire body in the opposite direction of where we’re going. She hasn’t been very aggressive toward other dogs, just apathetic really. We let her loose in a dog park near me and she just kind of stayed around us, and sniffed a few dogs here and there. She did growl at one when he tried to climb under the bench that she was occupying.

Introducing Sunny

Sunny is an eight year old red male shiba who came to us on 6/22. His owner had to move and were not able to take him. He’s a friendly boy who is good with children, adults, and the vet. He will play with a squeaky toy and is a gentle dog.

He likes other dogs, is very good at meeting new people, but does not like thunder storms. We’re not sure how he’d act with cats. Sunny walks well on a leash, is house broken, and knows some commands. As you can see he’s a big boy and needs to lose some weight but he has a lot of love to give.

Keep checking back for updates on Sunny!

Paulie Update

Paulie is settling in nicely at his foster home. He has a friend and is very affectionate with his foster family. He doesn’t like cars whizzing by when he’s out for a walk, they make him nervous - but he does like car rides.

Here’s a few pics of Paulie and his friend Adrienne:

Penny Update

Penny has become very comfortable in NYC, but she still does not like loud noises. That rush hour traffic and the noises buses and trucks make still make her jump a little. She also still gets a little tense when bikes, strollers, anything with wheels comes too close to her. Penny is a petite little Shiba and from her perspective these things could be scary. She’s working on overcoming the issues and has definitely come out of her shell.

She plays with toys, loves her buddy Snickers, and is learning to sit before she gets fed. She also is very affectionate once she gets to know you. She likes to lean on and hang out with her foster mom. Penny has a few vocalizations - barks at the door, yodels when she’s excited, and howls at visitors when she first meets them.

Penny is a sweet dog and is looking for a forever home.

Tiki Update 6/24

Tiki is doing very well. He has a nice soft coat which if anything has gotten softer.

Tiki is very playful, loves playing with Sofie. He is high energy and inquisitive. Tiki has really improved with giving up items he sees as valuable. Over the last couple weeks, I have been able to take things from him without trading. I still always make sure I have a treat with me just in case.

Tiki is just an overall friendly and affectionate dog. He’s happy to see ALL people and gets along with all dogs he has encountered. He loves Sofie and Syd, gets along well with Sheba and respects Sawyer. Curious of the parrots.

Tiki is friendly to all and only barks at my husband in his police uniform, but no aggression.
He can tend to be a “bully” with treats. We’re working on that.

Tiki is coming along nicely with his commands. He sits, and lies down on command, and only needs a treat sometimes in order for him to do this. Tiki walks well on the leash when walked alone, working on it with multiple dogs walking with him.

For the most part Tiki comes when called. The only time he becomes stubborn is when he’s outside and wants to stay outside.

He could be a door bolter without consistent training. Wouldn’t trust not to bolt with an inexperienced person.

Tiki has a tendancy to snap, should be in a home with no children and should be with another high energy dog.

Brando is looking good

Brando has certainly improved and seems to love posing for the camera. Here’s some more pics!

Nicco update

Nicco is doing very well. He is now 40 lbs. He is a good weight for his size, but if he ever gets overweight, he’ll have trouble with a grade II luxating patella, so it’s important he stays trim. Nicco also seems to suffer from allergies.

Nicco is a great dog and he loves human attention. He can be difficult when he is bored or frustrated by something and tends to try to pull fabrics around. He is generally disinterested in balls and chew toys, so I let him pull at his towel.

Nicco is friendly with other dogs, but tends to play rough. He is generally too rough to play with children.

Nicco sleeps in his crate but doesn’t like to be constrained to it other times. He also walks well on leash. Nicco can be left alone for long stretches. He is generally very well behaved, though he’ll act up when I arrive home because he’s excited.

Toby update

Toby is doing much the same since his last update. Due to the weather, he is shedding a lot, but that is normal for the breed.

Toby is very affectionate towards his foster family, but does not seem to get along with active dogs or puppies. He has shown some aggression towards the new puppy in his home.

Toby is crate trained, and goes inside his crate on command. He likes to bark and wants to chase after squirrels when he sees them. Toby loves his chair, and that’s where he sleeps during naps and at night. He still prefers his stuffed ball over other toys. And he still barks when he hears the subway go by.

Emmie Update

Emmie has had a tough life, but she is still such a sweet girl. After being adopted back in October 2007 Emmie is back at NYCSR. Due to unforseen circumstances, her adopter recently had to move into a no-pets building and gave Emmie back to us. We are always here for our dogs. Now, we’re searching for her real forever home. Is that you?

Emmie still displays some fear aggression towards other dogs and strangers, but she’s good with her family and friends once she’s checked them out. She is a high energy dog and loves to play. An ideal situation would be someone who has access to a yard or likes to take jogs and would take Emmie along. Her new foster mom stated that she’s exceptionally bright, a quick learner, and all bark, no bite.

Check back for updates on Emmie.

Latest news on Prince

Prince has recently moved to a new foster home. So far things are going well. He’s learning to not snap and is not as cautious around people in the house; he’s learning to relax and adjust to being in a home. He’s learning better manners everyday and has playtime so it helps relieve his stress levels.

We still do not recommend he go to a home that has a male dog or small children. But he’s very friendly, happy, and curious of people now instead of being fearful. He has also improved with his manners and training.

Prince is learning new commands such as stay, down, and how to walk with a loose leash… he’s easily distracted though and may pull. However, he seems to be food driven and has a taste for cheese and peanut butter.

Tasha’s Progress

For the last month Tasha’s made some progress but she is still very shy. She tends to hide most of the day but does come out. When she is out with the family she’s extremely lovable and affectionate. Tasha does not seem to have a prey drive nor approach any animal or human aggressively.

She’s getting better with walking on a leash but gets very scared of new situations. It will take some time for her to adjust and gain the confidence she needs to be a happy, well-adjusted dog.

Keep checking back!

Introducing Paulie

Meet Paulie. Paulie was found as a stray in Long Island and brought to the local town shelter. He’s got a great personality and gets along with dogs and cats (as you can see in the pic). Paulie is young, most likely around 9 or 10 months of age.

Keep checking back for more info.

Brando update

Brando’s new foster Mom, Ami has this to say:

Brando’s adapting pretty well here. No signs of aggression at all towards us or our Shiba and he has shown no apprehensiveness or nervousness whatsoever. He still tries to mount Dakota when he can, but hopefully neutering him will help that. Brando’s very sweet and will lean against you or even try to curl up in your lap, plus he’s very quick to give belly :) I’ve noticed he is a darter, and he needs to be watched when around doors.

Overall, it’s been very good :)

Ginger update

Ginger has not changed much since our last update, but I can say that she is getting more and more calm around strange dogs and is more willing to try and play with the resident dogs. She is such a joy to have around. We have found that she does not care for thunder storms and will whimper and cry during them unless she can sit by your side. Spring seems to be her favorite season as she loves to lounge around the yard and sunbathe.

New photos of Ginger to come soon.

Bea Update

Bea looks wonderful - here’s the latest:

Last Sunday I went to West Hills to visit Bea & Rusty. After a rigorous play session with Rusty, little Bea came out to visit. As soon as I saw her, I began to cry with happiness! Bea looks like a new dog! She was given a doggy spa treatment to wash away all the years of outdoor living. Her coat is now getting into great shape. She loves to be brushed and looks forward to her daily beauty routine with the staff at West Hills.

Since her arrival, Bea’s personality has really begun to shine through. She now looks forward to seeing the staff and playtime in the run. Recently, she really showed how comfortable she’s become; during a walk she laid down and gave belly! The West Hills staff rejoiced and happily have been giving her belly rubs as requested.

During my visit with her she wanted lots of scratches and rubs. She then gave me belly as well! She’s been treated for Hookworm and has responded beautifully to treatment. She’s also gaining weight slowing but surely with a healthy appetite. She’s a very sweet girl with a lot of love to give!

Rusty Update

A few days ago one of our NYCSR volunteers headed out to see Rusty and gave us this update:

Last Sunday I went to West Hills to visit Bea & Rusty. Rusty came out first. He ran over to me with a huge Shiba smile and a happily wagging tail. He showered me with a million kisses. His fur looked brighter and so soft.

He really is quite puffy since his coat is so thick and healthy. Rusty was in full happy play mode. He promptly went into a play bow and we were off! He was running around and giving belly and having a great time. I gave him a good scratch behind the ears and he put his paw on my hand as to say ‘no, don’t stop!’

The staff at West Hills say that he’s just so well behaved. He’s been incredibly affectionate and loves to play in their kennel’s outdoor run. He’s also been great on a leash. His kennel cough has cleared up and is very playful with other dogs. He would do best, they think, with other dogs that would enjoy his playfulness and energy. He has a great appetite and is well behaved at meal times. He’s just a happy boy that wants nothing else but lots of play time and attention!

first arrived at West Hills
