Last week our Animal Welfare Director went to visit Toby and told us that he’s AMAZING. His obedience is perfect, and he’s got the qualities to become a performance dog with some training. Toby is very focused and affectionate. He loves treats and toys and is motivated to listen and obey for them.
Our Animal Welfare Director did notice that he’s a little cautious with strangers, but not aggressive or fearful, just needs to take a few minutes with meeting someone. She reported that his foster family has done an amazing job with him, and he’s very stable and smart!

Bean is a sweet and very affectionate dog. She loves to be around people and is nice to everyone she meets. She’s always excited when you come home and doesn’t bark or wine in the mornings or beg incessantly at the dinner table. She is happy just curled up on the couch or sitting on the windowsill staring out.
Bean is very smart and loves to hunt rats and sometimes will try to eat at insects that fly around her. She can pretty much find her way into any bag if there’s something interesting for her, and has been known to open zippers and Velcro. She walks great on a leash and knows to stop and go at crossroads. She also loves to run with you although her foster dad hasn’t taken her longer than a few blocks.
Bean doesn’t seem to like other dogs at all. If not properly and calmly introduced, she will growl or snap at another dog. Dog runs are pretty much off limits, since she will inevitably get into trouble. She much prefers grass to concrete when going for walks, so easy access to a park or a back yard would probably be much preferred.

Toshi was rescued from a Pennsylvania City shelter. He is around 4 years old and weighs 35 lbs. He was a street dog and has little to no knowledge of living in a house.
He has taken very well to crate training. All other training is slow and steady. He does not learn as quickly as a dog who grew up in a home. He does not have any understanding of proper home behavior but is learning quickly what it is like to be in a house. He enjoys companionship and loves to lay by his foster’s side while watching tv.

Candy is a 30lbs., spayed, female shiba who is approximately 4 to 6 yrs old. She was a stray before coming to NYCSR and is very independent and can be aloof at times. She is friendly when she meets people. Candy only likes to be petted on the head.
She is a very quiet dog, doesn’t seem to have any aggressive tendencies, and can be trusted alone in the house. On walks and when she’s outside, Candy tries to chase small animals like squirrels and will pull to chase them. She is also not very friendly with other dogs.
Her current foster home is training her to learn some commands, Candy may not have ever received any training prior to being a stray. We’re working with her to learn how to walk on a leash, politely greet people, trust people, and to adjust to living with people.
She needs to get some more basic obedience, but she is very well behaved in her home. She does understand no, and is learning sit and stay. With some time and consistent training, Candy will be ready to find her forever home.
Keep checking back to learn more about Candy!

Bean is a 4 1/2 yr old tri-color, spayed, female shiba. She needs a new home because she doesn’t get along with small children very well, but is a loving, playful, and calm dog overall. It seems she’s confused by the body language of children and becomes defensive. However, she gets along very well with adults!
She also doesn’t mind being groomed and doesn’t put up too much of a fight at bath-time. She’s house-trained, crate-trained, and walks well on a leash. She also knows commands such as sit, down, come, and no. Overall Bean is a loving, cute little dog.
Check back with us for more on Bean!

Bailey is about 2 yrs old and is a tri-color male shiba. He is a very friendly and playful dog, good with strangers, affectionate, gentle, and allows himself to be handled by people. He needs a new home though because he can be stubborn and has been known to become aggressive when he has an item of high value, such as a treat. His current owners are expecting a baby and are unable to give Bailey the proper training he would need.
He’s an athletic dog, loves to play, loves to go for walks, and does interact well with children. It is recommended that he go to a home with older children and someone who is able to work with Bailey.
Bailey is housebroken, crate-trained, and knows commands such as sit, no, and off. He could use more work on with leash walking as he tends to pull and could learn some manners. He will jump on people and sometimes plays too rough with other dogs.

Our sweet Brando is doing quite well. He has been neutered and is gaining his much needed weight.
Here’s what Ami says:
“Brando is a very sweet old boy with a lot of love to give. He gets along great with Dakota; they play and nap together all the time. Brando loves to snuggle and be around his people. He has only been exposed to older children (teenagers) at this point, and has been great with them. Brando will bark when the doorbell rings and sometimes will join in when Dakota barks at something. Brando is very affectionate with everyone he meets. He wants to investigate anybody who comes in the door and immediately gives puppy eyes to be petted.
He listens to his commands well, especially when there is a treat involved. He pulls when we initially start a walk, but learns very quickly from corrections while on leash. He isn’t fazed by small animals, but he does start to pull when he sees other dogs.
He tries to steal the dish towels, but never food. We just recently let him sleep out of his crate at night, and he is out of his crate all the time unless we’re not home. We’re still crating him when we aren’t home, and he cries for a little bit when he’s first put in the crate. Once he realizes that we’re not still in the house, he settles down.
Brando rarely plays with toys, but he seems to prefer ropes to anything else. He’s a high energy dog and needs to be able to run (either at a dog park or a fenced yard) and taken for long walks. He tends to get restless (paces and wanders) if he doesn’t get out.
I think Brando would benefit from a home where he has somebody (or lots of somebodies!) to play/run/walk with. He would do great with or without other dogs, although if he is placed with other dogs, they should be moderate to high energy dogs in order to keep up with him
Brando can jump at least 3 feet from a standing start. This doesn’t happen often, but is something to keep in mind with regards to baby gates or fences.”

Paulie is very friendly with the other dog in his home. The both have to say hi to any dog they see during walks. Paulie is friendly with people, but still a little leery of men, and he has been great with his foster mom’s 15 month old niece. Yay!
Paulie is not toy aggressive, and loves to play tug-of-war with his rope toy. He tends to be vocal when he hears the front door and other minor noises. Although, he is affectionate, he still ducks at first when you go to pet him.
Paulie is crate trained and knows some of his commands like sit, lie down and stay. Some of them are still being worked on, but he is a quick learner.
Paulie’s foster mom, Courtney says the following?
“You have to practically drag him out the door for a walk, we wait a while for him to come out when Adrienne is already out the door. He usually ignores wildlife while outside, but if anything is close and Adrienne is in prey mode, Paulie will copy her and lunge, but this is rare.
Paulie loves to sleep on the floor next to the stove, this seems to be his favorite spot. At night he sleeps in his crate, and he naps where ever he wants during the day.
Paulie would be great in a loving home that know Shiba’s. Someone that understands he will take a while to get used to a new environment. He likes to chew books, which is a new thing, so we are working on correcting this behavior.”
Stay tuned for new photos of Paulie.

Prince’s foster mom Molly told us that Prince is a big sweet baby of a shiba. He needs an owner who is both patient and persistent. He is very smart and active and needs an owner who will keep him busy.
Prince’s training is coming along, his manners are improving and he’s getting better every day. He will do anything for a hotdog! All you have to do is ask.
He’s also very affectionate and likes to sit next to her for some pets. Molly has reported that the best home in her opinion would be one with a female dog and no children under 15. He also needs an active family who will take the time to reinforce his obedience training after adoption.
From his foster mom:
I feel he would be a wonderful candidate for earning an AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate. All Prince wants in the world is to be correct and to be loved. Someone who can give him that will be the perfect match.

July 7, 2008, New York City - NYC Shiba Rescue, Inc. (NYCSR) announced today that Zennia Barahona has been named President of NYCSR effective July 11, 2008.
Current President & Founder, Jenna Gates, is stepping down as President. She, her daughter, and their two Shibas, Snickers and Secret, are moving to Indianapolis at the end of July. Although Jenna will no longer be involved in the day-to-day operations of NYCSR, she will remain on the Board of Directors and will be working with both Zennia and NYCSR’s Vice President, Sara Newman, to codify the rescue’s policies and procedures.
Zennia Barahona is proudly owned by six year old Shiba Moxie. After an eternity of researching the "right" breed for her, Zennia came across the Shiba Inu, a breed that encompassed everything she ever wanted. A year later, a 12 week old Moxie entered her life and stole her heart. When Mox was about five, Zennia stumbled on the NYC Shiba Inus and their Human Companions - a meetup group for Shibas and their owners. There, Zennia met Jenna & Snickers, Sara & Tiki, and the other meetup members who would later form the initial Board of NYCSR. In just under a year and a half, Zennia has been responsible, at one time or another, for every job within the rescue and has been key participant from day one. When asked how she feels about the rescue, Zennia said “Being part of NYCSR - working with this dedicated & inspiring group of people to save and protect the beautiful, intelligent and amazing Shiba Inu - has turned out to be the most rewarding experience in my life.”
NYC Shiba Rescue, Inc. (NYCSR) is an all volunteer group dedicated to contributing to the quality of life of Shiba Inus in and around the New York City metropolitan area. To that end, NYCSR actively works to rescue Shiba Inus and Shiba Inu mixed breed dogs from dangerous environments and shelters in order to find them loving, permanent homes. NYCSR will, among other things, foster and evaluate Shiba Inus in order to prepare them for adoption and seek out proper adoptive homes for the dogs. NYCSR also promotes responsible dog ownership by educating the public in the selection, care and training of dogs.
NYCSR is incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation under the Not-for-Profit corporation law of New York State and is a federal 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. Since being founded in April 2007, NYCSR has grown to 50+ volunteers across 6 states and has rescued 45 purebred Shiba Inus and 6 Shiba mixes.

Rusty is out of the vet and in his new foster home. So far, so good. Rusty is getting along well with his foster family. He has some aggression toward other dogs on walks and tends to lunge and bark at them, but his foster mom is working with him on this. Otherwise, Rusty is very affectionate with adults and children. He has a normal energy level and likes to go on walks 3 or 4 times a day. He prefers his stuffed toys over other toys. Although Rusty doesn’t know many commands, he does come when called - sometimes. Rusty is crate trained and likes to sleep in his crate or on the couch. Rusty would be good in a home where he is the only dog and with an owner who is willing to work with him on his dog aggression. Overall, Rusty is a great boy, and is giving his foster mom lots of joy.

Toby’s foster mom is working with Toby on becoming more relaxed when the new puppy is around. He doesn’t seem as happy sharing the home with another dog. He would like to have all the love to himself.
A gate has to be placed between rooms to keep Toby and the puppy separated. With work, Toby and the puppy should be able to get along. However, it would be best if Toby went to a forever home where he could be the only dog.

Sunny weighs in at 55 lbs. and has started an exercise routine with his new foster dad, Andrew. Mostly walks, and that’s a bit tough on Sunny given the summer weather and his size, so sometimes he gets winded. He also has a low center of gravity, so he can actually knock you off your feet if he decides to bolt. Andrew has been kept on his toes with Sunny and his bursts of energy. But they are both having a good time.
Everyone that has met Sunny, has found him to be extremely nice, if not even a bit shy. He’s good with children and other dogs. Some dogs he can be friendly towards and others he acts aloof. Sunny may not have an aggressive bone in his body, he’s equally friendly to men and women and doesn’t jump up on people. Andrew is working with Sunny to learn some basic commands and to walk better on a leash.
Sunny likes to know what you’re up to - his foster dad Andrew said, “If we are in another room however, and the door is closed, he will howl. It’s not a full-out howl, but kind of a half-cry- half-howl. (Kind of sounds like a Walrus) It can barely be heard through a closed a door.” He will also follow you if you leave the room.
Sunny seems to be good at home alone and does not cause any problems. His foster dad believes that Sunny could use a large family, “The more attention for this dog, the better. He needs young people to push him and keep him moving. If not he will just sit around. I have yet to see him be aggressive towards anything.”
Keep checking back for information about Sunny!
