Brando update

Brando has been doing very well since his neutering, and has even gained a few more pounds.

His foster mom says this:

“Brando is very snuggly and loving. He’ll often come up on the couch with us and curl up next to or on our laps and immediately roll over for tummy rubs. He’s also very protective and alert when it comes to his surroundings. At times he can be easily startled, but that’s rare. He’s very playful and full of energy, especially for a 9 year old dog and he needs to be able to run and walk to wear down a bit.

The biggest obstacle that we have overcome is his behavior at night. We’ve gone from a dog who howls and whines all night long to one who jumps up on the bed and sleeps through the night. He’s getting much better with his basic commands and is slowly learning that the door is a “no-go” area. He’s getting a bit bolder with jumping at the counter to steal dish towels (never food). We have a lazy susan corner cabinet that he must have opened when he jumped up… full of food, but neither dog went after any of it.

When crated, he will cry for a few minutes then quiet down. He has graduated to being able to be left free in the house when we’re not there, and he doesn’t make a peep when he’s not crated and alone. The longest he’s been left is about 5 hours.

We have neighborhood stray cats that walk past our fence every day, multiple times a day. I’ve witnessed Brando go flying across the yard towards the cat when he sees one - he doesn’t do this for squirrels or birds or even other dogs.

  1. i may be interested in adopting. i currently have a shiba, that was unwanted, and a cocker spaniel. I love him, and love going home to him. he’s a great member of our family. although overly alpha at times, usally about food or attention
. i would love for him to have a shiba friend. i’ve fenced my yard and fully understand the bolting habit. i read the “all about shibas” and understand the yearn for another. i’m curios, when my shiba gets aggressive with my other dog, what should i do? i always just grab him and lift him out of the fight, then verbally give him hell..
anyway I like Brando, ginger ,prince, bailey, rusty and paulie.

    any info would be appreciated

  2. Hi Ron,

Thank you for your interest. Please fill out the adoption application located on our site to get the process started:

Here is also a message board from our meetup group about Shiba aggression:

  3. I know on your home page there is the article about how you don’t recommend Shibas for first time dog owners, but I’m looking for my first dog and I really like the Shibas - do you think an older Shiba like Brando would be appropriate?

If so, please let me know and I’ll go ahead and fill out the app.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  4. Hi Matt,

It depends on how much dog experience you have had with friends’ dogs or other family members and how much time you’re willing to invest in learning how to be a dog owner and all the responsibility. It can be totally fun and awesome and also sometimes very hard.

It can’t hurt to fill out an application. If you’re interested, we always need foster homes as well.
