Roxy recently arrived at a no kill shelter in NJ as a stray. We normally only work with shelters where dogs are in immediate danger, but the Operations Supervisor at this shelter was concerned because Roxy was becoming quite anxious in the kennels. She contacted Shiba rescue about finding a foster or permanent home for Roxy.
She was both microchipped and spayed prior to arriving in the shelter. The microchip was registered to a pet store that has since been closed, but the microchipping company was at least able to tell the shelter that Roxy is 6 years old. Her temperament evaluation at the shelter showed she is both cat and dog friendly, prefers the company of male dogs more than females, no aggression issues were noted. They did note that Roxy doesn’t tolerate being restrained well, and therefore bypassed that during her evaluation. No signs of food aggression and takes treats very well.
Terra went and picked up Roxy from the shelter yesterday and took her to foster care. So far things are going well and we’ll post more information for you soon!

What, if any, types of evaluations are done while Roxy is in foster care? Will she be evaluated for her behavior towards children, particularly younger children? We currently have a male Shiba pup in the home and really want to have a female. How soon do you accept applications for new arrivals?
Hi Julie,
We expose our foster dogs to as many people and animals as possible within the normal course of their life in foster care. If we have a potential adopter with children and the dog hasn’t been tested with kids, then we find a way to do so.
We accept applications all the time. There’s a whole application process - home visits and reference checks - that has to be completed, so by the time we’re done with that Roxy could be ready to go!

Any updated information for Roxy, now that she is available for adoption?
She is darling.
I love her! She is so adorable. I live in a small apt. in Manhattan (~800sq.feet), I wouldn’t want to limit her space, has she lived in small apt. before? How much exercise does she need?
She seems really sweet and smart!
Hi Lorraine,
Roxy is being fostered in an apartment now in Brooklyn. My Manhattan apartment is about the same size as yours and I have TWO Shibas.
They pretty much chill and relax in the apartment except for the occasional game of fetch or mad dash around the place. I take them out for lots of exercise outdoors though. We go out for about an hour every morning and an hour in the evening and then 10 or 15 minute walk right before bed. We do more on the weekends. The key with Shibas is to keep the MINDS active though, not just their bodies. They are smart, smart, SMART and if you don’t keep them mentally stimulated, they can be trouble. Playdates, training classes, walks in different places, interesting new toys… all ways to keep them happily busy.
If you are interested in adopting Roxy, you can download an adoption application from our website, complete it and fax it in. The application is linked from this page: http://nycshibarescue.org/adopting-a-shiba/
Jenna,
I sent my app this past week, you said Roxy has a meeting with a potential “parent”. Can you contact me if that didn’t work out for roxy.
You have my number on my app. Thanks for your time~Kathy
Is Roxy still up for adoption? Any news?
Yes, Roxy is still available at this time.
