Introducing Sabrina

Meet NYC Shiba Rescue’s third foster dog.

SabrinaOn Thursday of last week, I received an email that a female Shiba near Albany needed out of a shelter. I thought “how can we possibly do anything about a dog way up there?” but I know one person about 20 miles from there, so I dropped her an email and then sent out an email to the NYC Shiba Rescue list. Then, the most unlikely thing happened… a few minutes later I received an email back from Terra that she was IN Albany through the weekend and not far from the shelter in question at the moment! By that evening she had evaluated the dog and we had agreed to take her. On Friday, paperwork was faxed and she was spayed and microchipped. Saturday, Terra picked her up and brought her home to NYC. Sunday, she - now named Sabrina (Bri for short) - attended a training workshop that a bunch of us already had planned. Considering everything this dog had been through in one short week - being left in the shelter the day before her fourth birthday, being subjected to shelter temperament testing (which includes pinching dogs’ feet, not something a Shiba can tolerate), being spayed, and then picked up by a stranger, driven 150 miles away and introduced into a new home in a completely new and strange place - she was amazingly easy going and happy. Everyone loved her and I’m sure she’ll be adopted out pretty quickly.

  1. Any idea why she was given up to begin with?

  2. Her markings are beautiful. I love the story of how she got her name. Adorable.
The white above the Urajiro on the chest reminds me of dogs from Tomo’s breeder and makes me wonder of Sabrina was one of hers?

  3. Lachlan - She came into the shelter as a stray and then was ID’d and surrendered by the owner. They were given two chances to take her back (when she first came in and again the day before we took her). They just didn’t want her. :(

Gloria - Now you’ll have people wondering how she got her name… :) I’m going to leave that story for Terra to tell though. I doubt she is one of Kathy’s dogs. Kathy stays in touch with all her dog owners. I’ll send her the link though, just in case!

  4. I can’t wait to hear the story. Thanks, Jenna, for the further explanation. It’s a shame. But clearly her owners can’t/won’t take care of her, and she needs someone who can. I have no doubt you’ll get her adopted out, with her personality.

  5. I see that adoption is pending. Is Bri no longer available? we have a 3 yr old shiba (emily) who would LOVE a sister!

  6. Bri is going to her new home on Saturday, so her adoption is almost official.

You’ll probably have better luck with a male Shiba as a pal for Emily. A male/female pair is a lot more likely to get along than a female/female pair.
