Introducing Tigger

Tigger is a very sweet little Shiba boy who recently came to us from a shelter in NJ. He is neutered and about 3 years old. He was left at the shelter by his owners, who claimed he was destructive in the house and repeatedly escaped from their chain link fenced yard. He hasn’t been destructive in foster care (nor was he in the shelter), but he’s definitely an escape artist, so a very secure fence is a necessity. If there is a gap under the fence that he thinks he might be able to fit through, he will try. He can also easily climb baby gates.

Tigger is cautious with strangers, especially men. He is super friendly towards kids, both boys and girls. He loves attention and is pretty affectionate, but not overly so. He likes to be around his people and he LOVES being outside.

HATE is an understatement for the crate and bath. He doesn’t just wine and bark… he freaks out. His foster mom is taking baby steps with that; She is feeding him in the crate by putting his food half way in and letting him stick out a bit…not confining him. She is also crating him throughout the day for very short periods of time (15-30 mins) giving him a treat when he goes in and another when he comes out. It will take a lot more work for him to be cratable for long periods, but so far he has been fine unconfined in the foster home. We have not seen any signs of destructive behavior even when left alone.

Tigger is definitely food motivated. He does basic commands for a treat. He walks pretty well on a leash without pulling. He sleeps all night in bed with his foster mom. Tigger should be available for adoption on or around 11/27/2007. Stay tuned!

  1. I just want to steal him right through my monitor! SO CUTE. And sounds like a challenging little guy, too. Perfect- I bet he’d like scent/seeking games a lot, that would keep him active and less intent on finding holes in the fence. ;)

  2. Tigger is the cutest little boy with such a sweet personality. Now that he is settling in, he is less interested in whats on the other side of the fence, and just enjoys playing with toys or his foster siblings. The crate is still a challenge, but we keep trying.

  3. Its nice to hear Tigger is doing so well. Wonderful pictures. I miss his cute yowls.

  4. I know…his yowls are adorable! I think he is trying to say “I love you!” He really is a wonderful dog and smart! He is very affectionate but does have that Shiba “what’s in it for me” attitude.

Again, a secure fence is a necessity with this handsome boy… or the willingness to walk him (which he loves!) If first he doesn’t succeed, he will keep trying. He will try to get over, under, through…whatever it takes.

The crate is still a challenge, but we keep working on it. However, he is fine unconfined when left alone. He is not destructive.

He’s just an all around sweetie! And soooo handsome!

  5. Tigger is gorgeous!

I can tell you that Tigger is very dog-friendly. If you’re interested in him, you should submit an application. (An application can be downloaded from http://nycshibarescue.org/adopting-a-shiba/ ) After we review the application, we check references, conduct a home visit and arrange a dog meet for your dog(s) and the foster.
