One of our volunteers, Michele, and her husband adopted 2 shibas from NYCSR and gave us an update on their furry friends as well.
The two cream colored shibas were adopted from us. The one on the left is Ginger and the right is Nami. The red shibas are Happy, top left, and Shabu.

Nami was their first foster and they fell for him. He’s a mushy dog who sometimes was easily frightened and at times can be grumpy. But he adjusted and fit very well in their house. Ginger was their second foster and for a while did not always get along with Shabu and Nami. She would play with the other two shibas but at night and when no one was home she was kept separate to avoid any problems. However, she got along great with Michele and her husband.

It took some time but Ginger now spends all her time with her shiba siblings and loves everyone. She’s also lost weight and is doing wonderfully!

As Michele put it:
“We’ve had many foster’s come and go over the last few years. It’s always hard to give them up, but knowing they are going to a wonderful forever home makes it easier to let them go. I stay in touch with the families who have adopted the dogs I have fostered.”

This past January they were lucky enough to take in another red boy. His name is Happy. He fit in almost immediately with their 3 shibas. They all get along well for the most part. A little scuffle here and there, but they know each other’s boundaries. Happy is our littlest guy. He’s a big mush and a lap dog. He has tons of energy and out-plays all the others. All four of them have become big mushy dogs and are very affectionate.

“I am thankful every day to NYC Shiba Rescue, the wonderful people I have met through them and of course for my wonderful babies who I love so much. The rescue can always use more foster homes. It is a very rewarding experience and helps to save the lives of many Shibas in need.”

We’re so happy to know that Ginger and Nami have such a great home and lots of siblings to play with!

We recently heard from Barbie’s forever home and she’s living the life! She looks amazing, happy, and comfortable. It’s an amazing transformation from the scared and shy looking dog we took in. Here’s a pic of Barbie when we first got her:

And here is Barbie in September enjoying the fall sunshine with her buddy, Caleb!

Seeing our dogs looking this great is one of the reasons we tirelessly volunteer and spend time promoting responsible ownership and finding homes for our shibas. We’re thrilled Barbie has such a wonderful home!

Rain told us that they are doing great and have a shiba friend who sometimes stays with them. Kit’s fur has come in nicely and is thicker and softer. In Feb, he took the dogs to a cabin in the mountains where there was deep snow and Kit loved it.

Zucca is being fostered by Rain and lives with Clay aka Kit now. This has been a great match, both dogs love playing together and hanging out. Zucca has helped Kit like his crate and understand what it’s for and Kit has shown Zucca what it means to be housebroken. Overall, they are a lot of fun and Rain loves having two shibas in the house.

Rain told that Zucca is mostly housebroken now and has gained some weight and grown a little. He also mentioned that her fur seems to have become softer. She’s a healthy looking dog and has great energy although sometimes she jumps on people when she’s happy to see them and has to learn better manners.

Zucca sometimes barks at strangers and seems to get nervous when initially meeting someone new. After she’s comfortable with them, she is better. Rain is working with her and shows her new things as they walk to help her understand that new experiences are not scary.

She still has some possession issues but they are mild. Occasionally she will growl at another dog if she has a toy and the other dog comes too close but she has not shown as food aggression and can have her food bowl near Kit’s with no issues. She’s also improved with her leash walking and heels when Rain stops walking and does not pull. Zucca also seems to be very smart and picking up basic commands quickly. She sits when asked and is learning to lie down. Overall, Zucca is improving and we’re glad to hear that she’s having fun with Kit and Rain.

Sasha is 18 lbs. and in excellent shape. Her teeth have been ignored and now they are clean and white, she lets her foster parents scrape the plaque off and brush them with very little resistance. She is a very sweet quiet little girl. She loves attention and is independent at times.

Sasha is working on getting along with her foster brother Dusty. They like to play with the rope toy and the nylabone. She seems to like everyone.

She has a big appetite for a small dog. She is mostly quiet and she loves to sit on the staircase and look out the window, she barks if someone approaches the house or passes by. Sasha is very affectionate, playful and very curious. If you put your hand out, she sits and bows her head for petting. She likes to play with Dusty and not so much with her foster parents. She likes to walk around and check everything out.

She likes to nap in Dusty’s bed as well as on the stairs, she fits nicely and they are carpeted. She feels very safe there because she can see everything from that location. When her foster parents are out, Dusty sleeps in his open cage and she sleeps next to her foster’s mom.

Sasha & Dusty go to the dog run every morning so they get a lot of exercise. Sasha seems to be in a great environment for her needs. She would be best in a home with someone who is home all of the time.

Sasha was aggressive with Dusty in the beginning but they are working it out and she might be better in a home with only one pet as long as someone was home all of the time. Sasha enjoys Dusty, they do play a lot.

Stay tuned for new photos and more on Sasha.

Candy’s personality has changed where she is no longer skittish and is very playful. However, she is still skittish around new people but getting better. She is friendly with other dogs outside the home during walks. She is more friendly with women, and tends to stay away from men and strangers although she is fine around her foster dad. She is good with children.

Candy is not really very vocal, only when she sees neighbors in their backyard. But if you tell her to stop barking she obeys. She is affectionate to a degree, if she knows you. She likes to be by herself, but will come and let you pet her.

She is getting a lot better with being around people. She doesn’t run away and hide anymore, but she is very cautious. She stays on command and walks well on leash. She is also well behaved in her crate. Candy sometimes comes when called, it depends on her mood.

Candy loves to be outside and run. She is outside about 2-3 hours a day depending on the weather. Also, a walk in the evening.
