He’s an older shiba and came from a shelter where he was scared and confused as to why he was there.

We don’t have much information on Rudy other than that he was brought to the shelter as a stray. From what we can tell he was someone’s pet at one time and likes being around people. He does seem to have some hearing loss and his sight is not what it used to be. He’s a senior shiba and is adjusting smoothly to his new home.

Jen told us he has explored her backyard, has no problems eating, and seems to like the new foster home. Everyone who has met him says he’s cute and has a great disposition. In a few weeks Rudy will be looking for a new forever home.

Dylan is one of our alumni shibas who has come back to us because his owner is unable to care for him. He is a fun loving dog who first came to us as a young puppy and had lots of energy, lots of curiosity about the world around him, and loved to chew.

In the 1 yr and 8 mos that Dylan (formerly known as Jerry) has been in his new home he’s learned some commands, has grown up to be a beautiful looking dog and has had a lot of fun. He’s friendly to other dogs, cats, and people. He loves to fall asleep watching tv while being cuddled and he’s good during his vet visits.

Dylan often greets people with a warm and enthusiastic welcome, unless he’s crated, then he announces someone has entered the house with a trumpetting howl. True to his shiba inu nature, Dylan will bolt out the door. It is extremely important that his next forever home understand the free spirit of a shiba and know the quirks and perks of the breed.

Dylan is up to date on his vaccines, house trained, crate trained, and walks well on a harness. He is still young and needs some more training as to what is ok for him to chew on and what is not ok. A game of trading, positive praise, and consistency should do the trick to help him understand that furniture is not for chewing on but a toy like a Kong ball is ok.

He has no problems with giving up something he’s found to play with or having his food taken from him, so he may do well in a home with children who know how to play well with dogs. Since he’s still very “puppyish” as his owner describes, he should be crated when no one is around, should be limited to what he has access to, and needs to be trained some more to become a great canine citizen.

Dylan will be available soon, will you be his new forever home?

Kuna’s foster mom gave us an update on how life has been with Kuna these last 8 months. She said he has come a long way since he arrived in their home in July. He was a very fearful dog and had to learn how to trust people.

The following is where he is now after being with Joanne and her family for 8 months:

He is a very energetic and happy dog. We have three other shibas and he has learned to get along with them very well and feels he is one of the pack. He eats side by side with them and all four of them ride in the back of the car together wherever we go.

Kuna has taken trips as long as 7 hours without incident. He has stayed in hotels and has had the opportunity to go to a variety of places . We trial our other three dogs in Obedience and Agility and Kuna has had the opportunity to walk around many of the shows with all the dogs around and has done well.

He goes for at least two walks a day which usually are about two miles long. Kuna has many dog friends along the routes. He will heel nicely if encouraged. Although he is basically good with other dogs he will get overly excited and jump if another dog shows too much energy. If we see a dog coming towards us that is not controlled on the leash we just make Kuna sit until they pass by. This works out well.

Kuna’s been good with visitors to the house and on our walks. He enjoyed playing with my twelve year old nephew on a four day visit. He has learned to be comfortable with the crate and often goes in it to sleep on his own although he may not be good in a closed crate for long periods of time.

He initially had a lot of anxiety with the crate and has come a long way but may need a little more time to be totally comfortable in a crate alone for a long periods of time. If we leave for extended periods of time he is left in an enclosed area with his crate and has done well. We did not keep him with our other dogs since our youngest dog and him play too intensely at times and we do not want an accident to happen. Otherwise all four dogs roam the house together without issues.

Although he only did it a few times Kuna has bolted out the door. He did not run far and wanted to keep us is sight. Because of this if people come over (workmen etc, who need to go in and out ) we crate him and that works well. If the visitors are friends and family he does well.

He has become a most loving dog wanting to play fetch and be hugged. He is quite bright and wants to learn. He seems to want nothing more than to be loved.

Kuna’s an amazing dog and has a lot of joy and love to give to the right family. He’s come a long way and has become a wonderful canine citizen. We’re so glad he’s with Joanne and her family, and can’t wait till Kuna finds his forever home!

Buddy is chillin’ in NJ and loving the nice weather. His foster mom, Jenn, sent us a few videos of Buddy walking around with all his friends (her dogs) in the yard. He’s come a long way and we adore him. He’s looking for a forever home, someone who understands his quirks, his fears, and his body language.

He’s a serious guy at times and will explore places, ignore you (typical shiba), and act very very aloof. Then if there’s something good going on like a car ride, he’s spunky, wagging his tail, and giving you kisses! He’s quite the shiba and has definitely touched all our hearts.

Kuna’s foster family have been working with Kuna to get over his separation anxiety. Recently, they had to leave him alone for a full work day and Kuna was very unhappy. He became upset and they are trying to confine him in a small room away from the other dogs because he has a tendency to play too rough and needs supervision. However, Kuna is a playful and good dog overall.

He’s becoming very comfortable with his foster family and is friendly towards other dogs he meets on walks, and the ones he lives with in the house. He’s also been very good with meeting strangers, children, and likes to go for car rides. He enjoys playing retrieve with toys and shares with the other dogs. He has shown food aggression in the past with the other dogs but at present he seems to be OK.

Kuna is also their new alarm system! He makes a variety of noises, not quite barks, to let them know someone may be walking by the house, delivering mail, or anything that needs to be brought to their attention. Kuna is also learning to “come” when called but as with many Shibas, this seems to be more dependent on their mood than reinforcement!

Buddy is now part of Jenn’s pack – he has been interacting with her other dogs on a regular basis and likes it. He also now has a thing for car rides and gets extremely excited when Jenn gets ready to go somewhere because he hopes it means he gets to go too.

Jenn let us know that Buddy does have allergies but they seem to be seasonal. He also has a luxating patella (similar to a floating or loose knee that people may have) so he needs to take it easy jumping around to not make it worse or hurt it. At the moment, it doesn’t affect him at all. However, whoever adopts him should know to not let him jump off high surfaces or put too much shock on his back legs. Buddy takes glucosamine everyday and a multi-vitamin and runs around like a puppy!

Buddy is becoming a very well-adjusted dog. He will always be cautious with trusting people but he’s made amazing progress in the time we’ve had him. Jenn told us that he likes to run around the backyard with her dogs and follows the pack around. When he’s tired, he lays in his bed and takes a nap. She’s not had any major issues with him and her dogs at all. Buddy found his placement quickly and knows he’s not the top dog, but is quite happy just to be part of a pack and have a foster family that loves him, plays with him, and teaching him what it means to be in a home.

He’s a happy boy overall, still jumps up on Jenn and her husband when he’s super happy and excited, and likes to go on adventures in the car with Jenn. Jenn also uploaded a few videos of Buddy to our Youtube acct.

Jenn, who has been working with Buddy for many many months, is getting ready for Buddy to move to a new foster home. He has made amazing progress with Jenn, her family, and pack. He learned to trust a little more, didn’t have to be on guard all the time, and began to relax and live a nice stress free life in her home. Jenn worked with him extensively and he is a happy dog who still needs to understand and learn that he doesn’t need to guard his food and that the vet is not a scary place. His allergies are improving and he’s a very healthy boy, overall.

Buddy is amazing and he just needs someone who is very experienced to learn from him, teach him, and help him feel safe, secure, and loved. He has a body language all his own which makes him unique to all of us here at NYCSR. He willingly wants to meet people, greet them with excitement, but yet tenses up and becomes frightened quickly with sudden movements. He’s become much better with understanding that no one is going to surprise him or hurt him, but old habits and conditioning can be hard to break. He’s a wonderful dog and we believe his new foster home will take Buddy to the next level of being a great dog and wonderful addition to someone’s home.

Jenn sent us a couple pics of Buddy:

Dennis, Kuna’s foster, let us know that Kuna has improved and adapted to the rules, routines, and household. Kuna likes to meet new people and will lean and cuddle up against them rather quickly for a Shiba. He also is very happy with his foster sister and they play together with no problems.

Kuna no longer exhibits agression during dinner with the other dogs in the house and can eat his food right next to them with no growling or posturing. He also willingly will walk into his crate and go to bed at night. Dennis said it seems that Kuna hasn’t had any nightmares or nervous reactions in weeks.

Overall, it sounds as if Kuna has adjusted. He gives kisses to his fosters, walks better on a leash, greets new dogs without hostility, and his anxiety seems to be lessening. Kuna is also quite the guard dog. He barks if he sees or hears something unusual near the house.

Kuna is a great dog and we’re glad he’s adjusted well to his foster home. He started obedience classes last month and we will have an update soon on how he’s doing with it.

Luna has been improving in her time with June, her foster mom. She is still has a weight issue but the Cushings seems to be under control.

Personality wise, June has told us she’s learning new things about Luna. For example: if Luna is in a separate room from her, she lets you know she wants to be in the same room as you by doing something mischievous but harmless like pulling a towel off a rack or ripping up a magazine. It’s as if she’s expressing a “How dare you put me in a room alone!” sort of response and it’s comical.

Luna is still extremely sweet and communicative. She lets June know when it’s time to go for a walk and also likes to choose the path by facing a direction or street and standing there until June complies. It’s Luna’s way of asking or saying, “We’re on an adventure! Let’s try this block.”

June let us know that Luna has bonded with the cat in the house even more so and likes meeting new people. She’s also playful but gets tired quickly because of her weight. Luna is a great dog and we can’t wait to find her a forever home.
