Ginger Update - 11/02/08

Ginger has a mild ear infection which her foster dad is treating. Overall, she’s doing great and has gained a little weight placing her around 17 lbs. She seems to get anxious now if she knows her foster dad is leaving the house. He’s come up with a few ways to help overcome this issue such as getting ready in the morning at different times.

She’s getting better with commands and walks nicely on a leash as long as she’s not overly excited and hyped up. Her foster dad, Simon, takes her for a job and walk everyday. She loves the exercise and it helps keep her calmer in the house as well as keeps her fit.

Overall Ginger is doing well and we’re all waiting for her to find her forever home!

Update on Ginger

Recently Ginger’s foster dad, Simon, contacted us to tell us what a great dog Ginger has become. He said she’s an extremely sweet dog with an independent streak. She will sleep on the bed with him and snuggle down around between his knees so she’s surrounded on all sides and feels secure.

Simon takes Ginger for jogs in the parks and he notices that she seems to want to keep pace with everyone and has a hard time deciding if she should sprint with the sprinters who pass them or jog with the joggers. It’s as if she doesn’t want to leave anyone behind, and they are all part of her pack!

He also told us that Ginger greets him with a wagging tail, excited and happy, and sometimes barks as if to say, “HI!” She’s also a silly dog who will chase her tail, roll around on her back, and will try to eat or bite at wind that hits her in the face. Simon said sometimes he will blow in her face just to watch her to do this and it makes him and his friends double-over with laughter.

Ginger can be trusted home alone and also seems to like cats. However, the cat she encounters does not seem to like her. People have complimented how beautiful she is as she has passed them by on the street. We have to agree, Ginger is a beautiful shiba who needs a forever home.

August update for Ginger

Ginger is a very loving dog and likes to follow her foster around everywhere. She’s become very trusting and affectionate, but can be aloof at times towards strangers. She doesn’t have a problem with other dogs unless they try to sniff her in which case she will growl at them. She hasn’t been exposed to children yet, so we don’t know how she will be around them.

Ginger is so well behaved that she no longer needs to be in her crate. She is good with all of her commands like sit, stay, lie down and come and she also walks well on a leash. The only time she barks is when her foster comes home.

All she needs now is her forever home!

6/28 Ginger update

Ginger’s foster had this to say:

Just wanted to give everyone a quick update. Ginger is doing really well now. She is getting along well with every body who comes over to the house, though she likes to jump on them and lick their face/hands. She isn’t hiding very much any more, though she likes to crawl in the closet from time to time to sleep/hide in the laundry hamper to get away from the storm. She knows when bed time is, because she’ll hop right on to my bed and occupy my sleeping spot. Haha. She seems to really like the Hund and Flocken gold brand, as she gobbles it right up, and she likes to beg for food, unfortunately, but I haven’t really been giving her any. When I come home, she goes crazy and can’t decide if she wants to jump on me, lick me or make me play with her, so she kind of does it all at once. On walks, she can be good, but sometimes she likes to lean her entire body in the opposite direction of where we’re going. She hasn’t been very aggressive toward other dogs, just apathetic really. We let her loose in a dog park near me and she just kind of stayed around us, and sniffed a few dogs here and there. She did growl at one when he tried to climb under the bench that she was occupying.

Ginger update

Ginger has not changed much since our last update, but I can say that she is getting more and more calm around strange dogs and is more willing to try and play with the resident dogs. She is such a joy to have around. We have found that she does not care for thunder storms and will whimper and cry during them unless she can sit by your side. Spring seems to be her favorite season as she loves to lounge around the yard and sunbathe.

New photos of Ginger to come soon.

Ginger Update

Ginger is sweet, outgoing and friendly. She loves to cuddle on furniture and play with toys, balls and romp outside. She does not like to be alone. She whimpers and cries when crated, gated or left in a room away from you. She does not bark much. She does shake from time to time when locked away in a crate or behind a gate.

Ginger is interested in cats but too excited to meet them safely. She has a high prey drive for birds, barks at them and bares teeth. She likes to chase the squirrels out of the yard. Once given time with dogs, she warmed up to Haiku and Tracker just fine. She is fine in the yard with them as well as in rooms together. She still bares her teeth from time to time but they just turn away and ignore her and nothing happens. They are very patient with her. The other dogs are too reactive to be around her.

Ginger is able to be left alone. She has been left up to 8 hours without incident. At this time she seems fine with a calm household. Perhaps with one confident dog. She loves a yard to run in, so a yard would be nice.

Introducing Ginger

Ginger came to NYCSR on March 29, 2008. She is 24 pound, 7 year old, red female Shiba who was surrendered to us by her owners because her life became very confusing after a new baby joined the family.

Foster mom Molly says

Ginger is fun loving, funny, out going and sweet. She loves to fetch tennis balls or cuddle at your side for a nap. Her new game is to attack the water off the waterfalls in the yard. She and Haiku are getting along better and better as each day goes by. She is re learning all of her commands and enjoying it.
