Sunny Update - 8/21/08

Sunny’s foster dad Andrew has told us that Sunny is losing weight! He’s not sure how much but he can see a difference and seems to be around 50 lbs now! This is great news. Sunny was overweight and needed to lose weight for his own health. Andrew has been taking Sunny out for walks everyday and little by little with a good diet, Sunny is becoming a slim, trim dog!

Andrew told us, “Sunny is a very sweet dog. He is very affectionate and loves being around people. With his weight loss he seems to have a lot more energy and is more playful. Sunny is prone to bouts of stubbornness however it is nothing serious when trying to bring him inside after a walk. This does not happen often and does not last long.”

Sunny gets along with other dogs and likes going for walks. He is enjoying the NYC cool summer we’re having. He also likes to have his belly rubbed and only barks when he hears someone coming to the door but quickly stops if you tell him to shush. Every now and then on a walk Sunny with see a squirrel and wants to chase it. However, we’re not sure what he would do if he caught one and from what Andrew has observed, he’s not sure Sunny knows either!

Sunny is getting more energetic but still prefers to keep his walks short, Andrew has been very good at making sure Sunny gets a nice long walk and good exercise. Overall he describes Sunny as a great dog and said the only time he’s seen Sunny get really nervous is if the smoke alarm accidentally goes off. Sunny’s tail unravels and he shakes, this only lasts about 10 minutes.

7/3 Sunny Update

Sunny weighs in at 55 lbs. and has started an exercise routine with his new foster dad, Andrew. Mostly walks, and that’s a bit tough on Sunny given the summer weather and his size, so sometimes he gets winded. He also has a low center of gravity, so he can actually knock you off your feet if he decides to bolt. Andrew has been kept on his toes with Sunny and his bursts of energy. But they are both having a good time.

Everyone that has met Sunny, has found him to be extremely nice, if not even a bit shy. He’s good with children and other dogs. Some dogs he can be friendly towards and others he acts aloof. Sunny may not have an aggressive bone in his body, he’s equally friendly to men and women and doesn’t jump up on people. Andrew is working with Sunny to learn some basic commands and to walk better on a leash.

Sunny likes to know what you’re up to - his foster dad Andrew said, “If we are in another room however, and the door is closed, he will howl. It’s not a full-out howl, but kind of a half-cry- half-howl. (Kind of sounds like a Walrus) It can barely be heard through a closed a door.” He will also follow you if you leave the room.

Sunny seems to be good at home alone and does not cause any problems. His foster dad believes that Sunny could use a large family, “The more attention for this dog, the better. He needs young people to push him and keep him moving. If not he will just sit around. I have yet to see him be aggressive towards anything.”

Introducing Sunny

Sunny is an eight year old red male shiba who came to us on 6/22. His owner had to move and were not able to take him. He’s a friendly boy who is good with children, adults, and the vet. He will play with a squeaky toy and is a gentle dog.

He likes other dogs, is very good at meeting new people, but does not like thunder storms. We’re not sure how he’d act with cats. Sunny walks well on a leash, is house broken, and knows some commands. As you can see he’s a big boy and needs to lose some weight but he has a lot of love to give.
