Toby’s foster dad, John, describes him as perfect. We have to agree. Since Toby has been with his new foster home, he’s more relaxed, happy, affectionate, and playful. The first week he was there, he tested his new foster but soon realized there was no need to do that and since then, things have been great.
Toby loves meeting new people. He always greets them with a wagging tail and great interest, once he has checked them out, he gives them a “hello” lick. He also has become very attached to his foster dad and likes to lean against his leg when they are together. Toby sometimes sits at John’s feet when he is on the computer.
John has been reinforcing the basic commands such as sit, down, off, and is teaching Toby how to shake hands. From what we have been told, Toby is a bright boy and is quickly learning what certain words mean or what event they trigger. John also told us that Toby walks with a prance and is quite regal in his stances. In the mornings they go for a 10 to 20 min walk and then in the evening they walk for almost an hour. So far, Toby has met dogs on his walk but John has been careful about letting him linger too long after the initial nose to nose greeting. Toby has been very good when he meets another dog on the street and has not shown any aggression or hostility. If Toby gets nervous or startled on his walk from any street noise, he no longer tries to bolt but rather leans up close to John and looks up at him. John says Toby is fine with a pat on his side or head and they keep walking. It sounds like John and Toby are perfect for each other!
Toby has had a bath, new toys, and only has barked when he’s chasing something like a fly in the apt or a pigeon that he sees outside. His winter coat is coming in nice and shiny and he’s eating well. Overall Toby is having a wonderful time with John.
Keep checking back to read more about Toby

Toby recently moved to a new foster home and within the first 48 hours we heard from his foster dad:
“He is quite possibly the greatest dog ever, no kidding. He is so chill and sweet and happy all the time. He took about 20 minutes to warm up to me and was by then licking my hand and following from room to room. I took him for a couple of long walks and he was great. The only thing that startled him was when we passed a bus stop and the sound the kneeling hydraulics made caught him by surprise.
When other dogs barked at him, he didn’t even jump - he just stared at them like ‘what?’ I have yet to hear him bark, whine, cry, or growl except once while playing. My roommates love him, and he warmed up instantly to them and to a couple of people we had over. I think one-on-one is best for new people as opposed to groups, but he is very sweet and sits by me while he checks things out first.
Anyway, I know it’s been only about two days, but just wanted to let you know he seems very happy and healthy.”
This is great to hear and hopefully Toby will find his forever home very soon.

Last week our Animal Welfare Director went to visit Toby and told us that he’s AMAZING. His obedience is perfect, and he’s got the qualities to become a performance dog with some training. Toby is very focused and affectionate. He loves treats and toys and is motivated to listen and obey for them.
Our Animal Welfare Director did notice that he’s a little cautious with strangers, but not aggressive or fearful, just needs to take a few minutes with meeting someone. She reported that his foster family has done an amazing job with him, and he’s very stable and smart!

Toby’s foster mom is working with Toby on becoming more relaxed when the new puppy is around. He doesn’t seem as happy sharing the home with another dog. He would like to have all the love to himself.
A gate has to be placed between rooms to keep Toby and the puppy separated. With work, Toby and the puppy should be able to get along. However, it would be best if Toby went to a forever home where he could be the only dog.

Toby is doing much the same since his last update. Due to the weather, he is shedding a lot, but that is normal for the breed.
Toby is very affectionate towards his foster family, but does not seem to get along with active dogs or puppies. He has shown some aggression towards the new puppy in his home.
Toby is crate trained, and goes inside his crate on command. He likes to bark and wants to chase after squirrels when he sees them. Toby loves his chair, and that’s where he sleeps during naps and at night. He still prefers his stuffed ball over other toys. And he still barks when he hears the subway go by.

Toby has been doing so well in his foster home. His coat has gotten much thicker and softer.
Foster Mom Phoebe says:
Toby is very affectionate with the family but a little conservative around strangers. He is very protective of his caretaker and would be a good companion with a family who is familiar with the breed. He seems to prefer men over women.
Toby prefers dog runs that are big and open over smaller ones. He loves to cuddle up and sleep in his dog chair. He gets nervous and barks when he hears the subway go by. He loves to go for walks and play with his stuffed ball.
If left home alone, we need to make sure there isn’t anything within his reach that he would like to chew up. Otherwise he is well behaved when home alone.

This beautiful black & tan boy is Toby. Toby is about 4 years old, neutered, up to date on his vaccinations, and microchipped. Toby was surrendered by his owners to a shelter in Southern NJ but they gave very little information about him. After his initial vet check at the shelter, they found that he was heartworm positive. Being a municipal shelter, they were not a position to treat him. They contacted us and we brought him into NYCSR’s foster program.
Toby was admitted to West Hills Animal Hospital, who did an amazing job previously with our foster Shiba, Molly. There, Toby was diagnosed with Stage One Heartworm Disease, which is the lowest level of heartworm infestation and is highly treatable. Toby was administered treatment, did extremely well and is expected to make a full recovery. He suffered no side effects and was released into an NYCSR foster home after a 3-day stay, but not before winning the hearts of the vets and staff at West Hills; he was a perfect guest!
Toby is a sweet, calm and very affectionate. He’s good with other dogs and loves to lounge with his humans. He’s crate and leash trained and housebroken. He’s also great in the car. Check back for more info on this special boy!
