Jordan is an 8yr old neutered male who was surrendered to us because he showed some aggression to the mailman and his owners were nervous that they would not be able to curb this behavior properly. Our initial impression of him is that he’s nervous, perhaps a little low in the self-esteem/confidence department and therefore guards himself by showing aggression. He barks a lot when he first meets someone and is very tense. If you let him sniff you and get to know you without forcing him, he seems to warm up some but he must be approached with a calm and controlled manner.

Jordan lived with children but would thrive in a home that was overall quiet, calm, and not too hectic. The buzz of a busy home seems to upset him and keeps him tense. He didn’t relax too much when we first met him but did let our volunteer pet him. He’s very healthy and has nice bright eyes but he did have his ACL replaced and may walk with a small limp or seem to favor a leg. Since he’s been with us, he’s been coming out of his shell and adjusting.

Keep checking back to learn more about Jordan!

At his vet check, Sam weighed a whopping 48 lbs. so his fosters are working with him to lose a little weight. He goes on several walks during the day and goes for a jog with his foster dad at least once a day. He seems to have allergies and this causes him to scratch a lot. The vet gave him some medicine to help relieve the itch.

Sam is very friendly with adults and children, and is not food or toy aggressive, although he is not too friendly with other dogs. He is affectionate and curious and knows some commands, but chooses to use this knowledge only when he feels like it.

Sam likes to be around his people and even sleeps on his bed in their bedroom at night. He is able to be left alone in the house without any problems. He is crate trained, but since he is so well behaved, he doesn’t need to stay in his crate. Sam loves playing with tennis balls, rope and squeaky toys.

Sam would be good as an only dog in a home where he gets lots of attention.

Stay tuned for more on Sam.

A few weeks ago Pixie showed some signs of illness and we weren’t sure how serious it was. It seemed that her kidneys were not working 100% and may have had an infection or something that might require some extra TLC for the rest of her life.

We found out last week that she’s improving! Pixie went to the vet and had a urine test. The results showed that her kidneys are getting better. The vet thinks maybe Pixie ate something toxic like ibuprofen but she’s going to be fine and can’t wait for her forever home!

There are some household items that can be very poisonous to dogs and cats, such as anti-inflammatory pills like ibuprofen and other drugs. The following list is from the ASPCA and contains some great info. If you think your pet has been poisoned, please call your vet immediately or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435.

Medicines that are harmful to pets:

NSAIDs
NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen or naproxen are the most common cause of pet poisoning in small animals, and can cause serious problems even in minimal doses. Pets are extremely sensitive to their effects, and may experience stomach and intestinal ulcers and—in the case of cats—kidney damage.

Antidepressants
Antidepressants can cause vomiting and lethargy and certain types can lead to serotonin syndrome—a condition marked by agitation, elevated body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure, disorientation, vocalization, tremors and seizures.

Acetaminophen
Cats are especially sensitive to acetaminophen, which can damage red blood cells and interfere with their ability to transport oxygen. In dogs, it can cause liver damage and, at higher doses, red blood cell damage.

Methylphenidate (for ADHD)
Medications used to treat ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in people act as stimulants in pets and can dangerously elevate heart rates, blood pressure and body temperature, as well as cause seizures.

Fluorouracil
Fluorouracil—an anti-cancer drug—is used topically to treat minor skin cancers and solar keratitis in humans. It has proven to be rapidly fatal to dogs, causing severe vomiting, seizures and cardiac arrest even in those who’ve chewed on discarded cotton swabs used to apply the medication.

Isoniazid
Often the first line of defense against tuberculosis, isoniazid is particularly toxic for dogs because they don’t metabolize it as well as other species. It can cause a rapid onset of severe seizures that may ultimately result in death.

Pseudoephedrine
Pseudoephedrine is a popular decongestant in many cold and sinus products, and acts like a stimulant if accidentally ingested by pets. In cats and dogs, it causes elevated heart rates, blood pressure and body temperature as well as seizures.

Anti-diabetics
Many oral diabetes treatments—including glipizide and glyburide—can cause a major drop in blood sugar levels of affected pets. Clinical signs of ingestion include disorientation, lack of coordination and seizures.

Vitamin D derivatives
Even small exposures to Vitamin D analogues like calcipotriene and calcitriol can cause life-threatening spikes in blood calcium levels in pets. Clinical signs of exposure—including vomiting, loss of appetite, increased urination and thirst due to kidney failure—often don’t occur for more than 24 hours after ingestion.

Baclofen
Baclofen is a muscle relaxant that can impair the central nervous systems of cats and dogs. Some symptoms of ingestion include significant depression, disorientation, vocalization, seizures and coma, which can lead to death.

Sunny is becoming a trim and fit doggie! He’s about 39 lbs now and he looks great. Sunny has a wonderful disposition and gets very excited to see and meet people. He greets his foster dad and his roommates with a happy face and wagging tail everyday when they come home from work. Sunny is almost always wagging his tail now and has become more playful. His foster dad, Andrew, is convinced that Sunny is so friendly that if someone broke into their apt, Sunny would lick them to death!

When Sunny meets a dog on the street he’s friendly but not too playful, but he is interested in making more canine friends. He’s also great with children and has never shown an ounce of aggression. The only time Andrew has any problems with Sunny is out on walks. Sunny has gotten more energetic since he’s lost weight and pulls on the leash and sometimes wants to chase squirrels. He plays with tennis balls and runs around in the courtyard with Andrew and his roommates.

Sunny is improving every day and we have a few mobile pics from Andrew to share with everyone.

Toby is having a ball with his foster family, and he’s doing well. His foster dad, John, told us that Toby’s getting his winter coat in and it looks great but he also is shedding like nuts. It’s that winter weather and heated house syndrome… cats and dogs all shed like it’s their job and it’s insane. But John is taking it in stride and says Toby is the best.

Toby loves to be around people and has become more cuddly. He’s curious and friendly when meeting new people and has shown some interest in meeting dogs but is still unsure of them if they project too much hyper energy. Toby likes to try and chase pigeons and play. When he wants something he’s learned that he can paw at your leg, a door, a toy, his water bowl, etc. to show John that he needs or wants something.

John noticed that Toby doesn’t jump as much at loud noises and seems more relaxed overall. Toby doesn’t really bark much at all now and has started doing the throat-y gurgle noises that some dogs do when they are excited. He also greets John with a gurgle noise and a wagging tail when he comes home. Toby has settled in nicely with John and seems to have really come around. He’s a great dog and we’re hoping he finds his forever home soon!

Ginger is doing well and having fun with her foster dad. He told us that she seems to not like car rides and becomes very anxious. He wasn’t able to calm her down or get her to stop shivering. We’re not sure why she got nervous. Maybe she’s not used to being in a car.

However, her separation anxiety is getting better and she’s still very friendly with other dogs in the dog run and any she meets as they are out for a walk. Her foster dad Simon thinks that Ginger may prefer to be the only dog in the house. They brought her to a friend’s house who has a dog and Ginger did not like meeting the other dog. She bared her teeth at the dog during an introduction and every time she heard the dog, she would begin to bark, but she did not do anything else. Perhaps she’d need to meet the other dog in a neutral zone if a potential forever home had another dog.

They are working on her training and reinforcing basic commands like sit, down, stay. Ginger overall is a good dog and just waiting for her forever home. Could it be yours?

He weighs about 42 pounds and is neutered. Wolfie is a good dog but showed some fear aggression to a vet in the shelter. It was the only time anyone viewed any type of anger or aggression from him.

Since he has been with NYSCR he’s been adjusting to a new home, new people, and new challenges… Wolfie doesn’t seem to be crazy about stairs. He will go up them but doesn’t like having to walk back down. His foster mom, Erica, has coaxed him and is working with him to understand that stairs are not a big deal and at the end there’s a reward be it in the form of pets, treats, or a good walk, there’s always a reward.

His foster family has already fallen in love with him and called him the perfect dog! They described him as cute, loving, and are so glad to be fostering him. He knows a few commands and likes to play a little with toys. He’s housebroken and friendly but has been a little nervous and shy since being in a shelter environment. It seemed to scare him a lot.
