Tiki Update, April 26

Jenn says:

Tiki is in wonderful shape with a beautiful coat. He is very energetic and fun loving. He loves to run, play fetch & tug. He loves being with other dogs and people. He doesn’t like you to take things from him, but these items are things like tin cans, tupperware bowls, and food that he finds on a walk. He will easily switch you the item if you tell him to sit and give him a treat. He is not aggressive with toys and we haven’t found him to be aggressive with treats (although he does want to be the first dog to get his treat). We continue to work on trading with him and he is very good at that. He will sit on command, but other commands (down, come, wait) he will only do for a treat. He walks well on a leash.

Tiki is a very lovable dog. He loves his people and playing with other dogs. He is really a sweet dog with a great personality. Everyone that Tiki has met loves him. He is very friendly with all people (adults, kids, men, women) and has done well with a lot of people (local baseball games and events). The only odd thing is he does not like my husband in his police uniform. He will run away from him, not go outside for him or eat his food when my husband is in uniform. He is sensitive to sounds, so it may be the police radio that bothers him. Even though he is sensitive to sounds, I have not observed any problems in a thunder storm.

Tiki is very friendly with my other dogs, and curious of the parrots. I would definitely suggest that he be placed in a home with other dog(s), preferably either younger dogs or high energy dogs.

Tiki is good with children, but because of his tendency to snap at objects he finds (particularly on walks), I would recommend a home with mature children that will understand that you need to trade him a treat for the object that he has.

For the most part Tiki is not destructive in the house and can be left out when we are not home. But, if you leave a pair of shoes or a remote within his reach, he will snatch them and chew them. He does not chew furniture, rugs, etc.

Tiki is very good in the crate, but often needs to be lured into the crate with a treat. When inside, he may whine a little bit, but that is just because he’d rather sleep in bed with his people. He settles down very quickly and prefers to be in the dark rather than with a night light.

  1. Hi Jenn,

I would love to adopt Tiki. However, it would be my 1st time as a dog owner. Although my wife grew up with a fox hound. I don’t know much about dog. My family of 5(3 children, 6,9,& 11),we all live in a NYC apartment. I am concern if this is a suitable environment for Tiki. Does Tiki shed a lot of hair? Is Tiki potty trained yet?

    Thanks

    Louis

  2. Hi Louis,

Thank you for your interest in Tiki. He is quite a cutie. Tiki is good with children, but because of his tendency to snap at objects he finds (particularly on walks), I would recommend a home with mature children that will understand that you need to trade him a treat for the object that he has. If you read all the comments on Tiki’s page you can see how he has progressed in this matter.

Tiki is housebroken and behaves well when left alone outside of his crate, as long as remote controls, shoes, and plastic bowls are out of his reach.

Shiba Inu’s in general do shed a lot because they have a double coat. You can find more information on the breed on our site as well as the adoption application form.

  3. Hi Michele M,

We all fell in love with Tiki. Is Tiki house trained yet?

Can Tiki eventually learn to be less possessive with things through training, or is it a naturally unchangable behavior in Shib Inus?

What size crate would I need for Tiki if we adopt him. Where is Tiki currently?

    thx

    LD

  4. Louis,

Yes, Tiki is house trained. Tiki is currently in NJ with his foster mom, Jenn. Jenn says that Tiki is good at giving up things if you offer him a treat for whatever he has. Although, not all Shiba Inu’s are possessive like this, a lot of them are. I would recommend reading up on the breed as much as possible, and also filling out the adoption application located on this site to get the process going:

A good size crate for Tiki would be one that holds a 25 lb. dog, no smaller than that, but a little larger is good too.

    Michele

  5. I have a 5 yr. old female siberian husky she would love a playmate so if I can bring her by to see how they get along please let me know…..Sal

  6. Hi Sal,

To get things started, you would need to fill out an adoption application: http://nycshibarescue.org/adopting-a-shiba

Once the application is filled out, we would check references and do a home visit. Tiki is being fostered in South Jersey. I’m not sure where you are located, but maybe during the home visit, Tiki can come along to meet your siberian husky.

Thank you for your interest, and we hope to be hearing from you again soon.

  7. I have 2 black and tans- one is 4 and one is 7. The 4 year old is full of energy and sounds very similar to Tiki. The older one was a rescue dog and he is more of the mushy, pet me type- not as Shiba as the first! If Tiki gets along, we could0 fall in love all over again!

  8. Hi Donna,

The first step to get started is to fill out an adoption application:
    http://nycshibarescue.org/adopting-a-shiba

Tiki is a very sweet boy, but we don’t recommend him with young children because of his tendency to snap when he has something of high priority to him. I don’t know if you have young children or not, but thought I should mention this.

Once you fill out the application and it gets processed, the next step would be to check references and do a home visit.

Good luck, and thank you for your interest in Tiki.

  10. Hello
How large is Tiki (lbs. and height) And is he fairly calm during the day or need a lot of attention?
I have a shiba girl who super low maintenance and very mellow…except when out to play. And she just loves shiba boys…haha. I’m hoping to find another with this temperment.
