Our foster dogs receive full veterinary care and any health issue is addressed as recommended by a doctor. They receive (or update) vaccines and are given heartworm and flea prevention treatments. Intact dogs are neutered/spayed as soon as possible after intake.
We evaluate temperament before accepting any dog. After the dog has settled into foster care another temperament evaluation is performed. Our fosters are tested with other dogs, people, kids, and, whenever possible, cats. If any unforeseen temperament issues are uncovered, we consult a professional trainer for advice. Socialization will continue throughout foster care and basic obedience will also be started or reinforced.
NYCSR discloses all medical and behavioral issues with potential adopters.
Hi, my name is Fonzo
I am a 8.5 year old Male
This sweet boy is Fonzo, a 8.5 yr old Shiba/Pom who has already charmed his way into his foster mom’s heart. Fonzo is an active boy who is doing well with his Shiba sibling but will need some training.
Whenever we speak with Fonzo’s foster mom, it is apparent that his is a mix in every way. He is a mix of Shiba Inu, silliness, separation anxiety, playfulness, challenging behaviors, and oh, some really great, newly cleaned teeth!
After only a month of taking medication for his anxiety, Fonzo has shown noteable improvement. As a result, his training is now progressing and he’s showing great promise. An ideal adopter for this boy is someone experienced with primitive breeds, like Shibas, who is also willing to work with him to help him become the dog he wants to be. Consistent positive reinforcement training is proving to be very effective so experience with this method is also important.
Fonzo is actually pretty ‘chill’ when he’s out walking with his foster mom and the sights and sounds of other dogs, cars, and people don’t bother him. However, he barks when left alone so it’s not recommended he be placed with someone living in an apartment or a more densely populated area. “Oh, Fonzo!”
